# Overview

A map is a square 2017 m or 4033 m on a side, divided into cells about 64 m across. Every cell is either land or water, and has a height and a vegetation layer. Everything you do in the map editor happens to cells, and the "bake" turns those cells into data for the landscape. The map editor stays as a **Voronoi Map** asset in your project.

## Presets

A **preset** is a C++ class that generates data from a **seed**. Each preset also comes with its own settings in **Map Settings**, so you can change what it builds. Use the same preset, seed and settings, and you'll always get the same map. A new seed gives you a different map from the same preset. When you change a setting, the map updates.

The plugin ships multiple presets in the plugin's source. A preset of your own is a class in your project's C++ module: see [Creating Custom Presets](/voronoimapmaker/how-to/write-your-own-preset.md).

## Paint Mode

**Paint** mode lets you change the map manually. [Building a Map from Scratch](/voronoimapmaker/tutorials/build-from-scratch.md) walks you through each of its tools.

## Bake Mode

Baking puts your map onto a Landscape in your level. Until you bake, your changes stay in the Voronoi Map, and when you bake again, the new map replaces the old one in the level.
