# Creating Stamps from Custom Heightmaps

A stamp is a heightmap image, plus a few settings for its size and height. In this guide, you'll make one from your own image. [Building a Map from Scratch](/voronoimapmaker/tutorials/build-from-scratch.md#6-placing-stamps) shows how to place it on a map.

**Before You Begin**

* A heightmap image: a PNG, 8-bit or 16-bit

## 1. Importing the Heightmap

Drag the PNG into the **Content Browser** to import.

## 2. Creating the Stamp Asset

1. In the **Content Browser**, click **Add** > **Miscellaneous** > **Data Asset**, and pick **VMMHeight Stamp**.
2. Name it `Stamp_MyRidge`, and open it.

3. Set its rows:

| Row | What it is |
| ----------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Heightmap** | The texture you imported. |
| **Smoothing (pixels)** | How much the image is smoothed when read, in its own pixels. It takes out noise and the terraces of an 8-bit image, and softens fine detail with them. 0 reads the image as it is. Default 6. |
| **Display Name** | The name shown in the stamp list. Leave it blank to use the asset's name. |
| **Footprint Metres** | How wide the stamp is in metres, measured along the image's longer side. The shorter side scales to match. Default 450. |
| **Height Metres** | How tall is the summit, in metres, above the lowest ground around the stamp's edge. Default 200. |
| **Falloff Distance Fraction** | How wide the band is where the stamp fades into the ground, as a share of the stamp's footprint, from 0 to 0.5. At the default of 0.15, a 450 m stamp fades over its outer 67.5 m. |
| **Falloff Strength** | Low values give a long, gentle slope, and high values keep the heightmap's shape until close to the edge. Default 0.5. |
| **Rotation Degrees** | The range a rotation is drawn from. Default 0 to 360. |

A stamp can only raise the ground. Its height is measured from the lowest ground around its edge, so if that edge is at the sea level, the summit will be shorter than **Height Metres** when it is on land.

## Troubleshooting

* **The stamp is terraced / noisy.** An 8-bit image has 256 levels, so a 200 m stamp steps every 0.8 m. Raise **Smoothing (pixels)**, or save the image at 16 bits.
